I want to knoew if I can give zakat or fitra to my syed relatives who are very needy.

I want to ask you a question about zakat. Is it right to give the zakat to a madrsa which is inside the mosque. One another thing is that we can also give the zakat to a sudent of that madrsa who is a local resident. Pls. reply soon.

Imam reply:
Brother Mustafa Iqbal it is not allowed to give zakat to a madarsa whether it is inside the mosque or outside of it. Because the basic condition of paying zakat is to make the recipient an absolute owner in his or her sole right of what is given to him or her and this condition is not found in paying zakat to the madarsa. In case you want to help madarsa by your zakat you would have to employ legal mean. Firstly you give your zakat to a deserving person and then this recipient will donate this money to the madarsa authority. In this way you can pay your zakat as well as help the madarsa without committing any wrong. You further asked about to give zakat to a student of this madarsa who is local resident. The answer is very clear that if that student is a deserving person (the one who is not owner of nisab) you can give him. Other wise it is forbidden to pay zakat to a person who is an owner of nisab. It is too forbidden to pay zakat to a minor son of a rich man.
